Patient Safety Communications
Your prescription for improving your health care team’s communication, collaboration and patient-engagement skills
Our Mission
It is the mission of the Patient Safety Communications (PSC) training team to devote our talents, collective wisdom and experience to support health care practitioners in mastering the critical communication skills which directly impact the quality of health care delivery.
Why Communication Skills Training?
It is well documented that to the extent that patients believe that their health care providers communicate clearly, honestly, empathically and respectfully with them, patient adherence to treatment, safety and desired medical outcomes will be optimized. Conversely, perceived poor physician/patient communication leaves the door dangerously open to patient non-adherence, undesirable medical outcomes and even costly litigation.
When unsatisfactory medical outcomes occur, poor communication is the number one stated reason why patients and their families choose to litigate. Delivering excellent patient-centered care requires clear and respectful communication between all members of the health care team: physicians, nurses, pharmacists, health care managers and administrators, patients and their families.
Improving the Patient/Provider Team Partnership
Today health care is going through a much-needed culture shift. Patient Safety thought leaders, health care professionals and patients and their families recognize that the most potentially successful medical outcomes occur when all stakeholders are viewed as partners on the treatment team. To be successful, this partnership requires creating a climate of respect, cultural sensitivity, empathy and clear communication between all team members.
